Rockstar has released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, remastered versions of GTA III, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas. Confusingly, there are several release dates for The Definitive Edition, with only digital versions for Xbox and PlayStation 5 available arriving today. In comparison, physical versions will not arrive until early December in most markets.
At launch, The Definitive Edition costs US$59.99, making it much more expensive than other remasters of classic games. However, there is a way to play the remastered version of GTA San Andreas for free, legally, albeit only on Xbox. You must have a Game Pass subscription, but Microsoft charges US$1 for a month's trial.
Microsoft does not boast that you can install GTA San Andreas via Game Pass, though. To download the game for free, head to The Definitive Edition's page, scroll to the San Andreas listing and click through to it. From there, you should be able to install San Andreas, which is over a 20 GB download.
Similarly, GTA III will be playable through PlayStation Now from December. The game should be available to download from December 7, the date that physical copies of The Definitive Edition ship.
